The largest of the USRA standard designs the 2-8-8-2 took heavily from the N&W Y2 class. The N&W was the largest user of the type from the USRA and continued to develop the Y's further after the war. Other original owners of the USRA design included the B&O Clinchfield Northern Pacific and Virginian. Later N&W sold some of their roster to the Santa Fe Union Pacific Rio Grande and Pennsylvania. These locomotives continued to perform well for all of their owner’s right up till the end of steam and now they are back in the Lionel roundhouse with new features and new and familiar paint schemes. For the first time the 2-8-8-2 will come with Bluetooth control “simpling” chuff sounds (mimicking the use of the simpling valve on these locomotives they will start with 8 chuffs per wheel revolution and transition to 4) and Whistle Steam as well as appropriate tender styles and other road-specific details including smokebox air pumps and number boards as appropriate.
