PROTOTYPE AND BACKGROUND INFO: The 2-bay Trinity Rail 3281 Through-center sill covered hopper car is optimized to transport cement, sand, or other high-density products. Features three round 30″ hatches and gravity outlet gates. These covered hopper first entered service in the late-1990s. Demand for these cars exploded when fracking became commonplace in North America. Now, a common site on freight trains, many railroads and leasing companies employ large fleets of these cars.
